Choosing a domain name of your site can range from fun to frustrating, from easy to extremely difficult — sometimes, it happens in a spur-of-the moment, most times it would take you a couple of hours and God forbid, stretches to days and weeks and even months.

You can say a lot is given in choosing the right domain name for your website, the competition to get the easiest, most popular ones can be quite overwhelming. Being identified may require a lot of effort and hard work that’s why you need a few important things to remember before you hit that buy button and get your domain up and running at last.

The answer to your dilemma is actually pretty simple. When it comes to you choosing your very own domain name for your online business, chant these three little secrets — “unleash your creativity, be practical and go for the longer option”.

Of course, knowing this secret may not mean that all is going to be that effortless afterwards. You need to invest and make it work. Remember that website that stood around the goal of making sales will require keeping its domain name the same so traffic can keep on coming. Be practical — something you should apply in everything about your life. Be logical and don’t get all that artist in you get you in to trouble. It pays to be experimental — but not too much.

Stick to your domain name rather than changing it a couple of times. Make it catchy, creative and even fun. However, don’t go overboard or else people might not take your site seriously. Keep it unique — there are plenty of competitive sites trying to grab the same popular domain names over and over that’s why you need to make yours new but still attractive.

Ever been to a website that suddenly infected your computer with a virus for no apparent reason? Sophos security firm experts now believe that the chances are that it will be an American site as the US has been found to be the biggest culprit of infected hosted sites.

This puts it in front of Russia and China making up 12.8% of the worlds infected sites, that’s according to Sophos’ Security Threat Report of 2010. The United Kingdom came in at a comparatively low 1.6%. Sophos’ report covers sites that claim to have ’sensitive’ or ‘desirable’ content pulling the user into clicking on to their site. This is a well known technique that is implemented but more recently websites of legitimate business are having malware attached to their sites by hackers, downloading damaging software on to clients computers without their knowledge.

To eliminate this threat webmasters need to make sure that they keep their sites secure as possible from hackers through security coding and patches against attacks. Meanwhile general computer users need to safeguard their computers by investing in good anti-virus software that scans email, websites and hacks. There are so many anti-virus to choose from with one to suit everyone’s needs so finding one that suits your needs, only takes a few minutes.

You wouldn’t leave your home un-secure so treat your computer in the same way.

A lot goes into choosing the correct domain name for your site. Every second, 60 domain names are being registered all over the world. Its how many companies are able to identify themselves from the world wide web crowd. A domain name should be memorable and add to your brand. So it is important to keep some things in mind…

Choose right package-

When buying a domain name there’s usually an option to buy it for anywhere between one to ten years. Really consider going for a longer option. A website that is based around a business will need to keep its domain name the same so customers can keep going back. The name may not always be available or grabbed by someone else. Having to repeatedly change domains can be frustrating for loyal customers. It is always worth shopping round for your domain name as some registrars will try and charge twenty times the amount that it is actually worth.

Be Creative…

Do you think Google would have been so popular if it had the plain name of just Searchengine? Its catchy and has a touch of ‘fun’ about it. A creative industry business can really benefit from an unusual domain name, its a great way of summing up the ethos and attitude of company, creating more appeal from your customers. A boring domian name might have connotations of a boring company that can even be bother with creativity. This will most likely be untrue, but its your job to make sure that is not the impression you give. Make sure you do your research on what name you are wanting, theres no point having an interesting domain name if theres millions of other companies similar to yours thinking on the same creative line as you.

…But be logical!

Its all well and good to be creative with your domain name but don’t go mad! What may have seemed like a good idea at the time, could prove to be the down fall of your site. Having a name that is totally inappropriate for your site could badly damage your business’ reputation, even if it seems funny and a bit of a joke to you, customers might not share your sense of humor. Bring a certain amount of restraint to your choices, a domain that is too long is pointless if no one can rememeber it. The same goes for one that is overly difficult to spell, it will be too much of a hassle for your customers.

As long as you keep these points in mind you should be able to choose a very successful domain name for your site.

One of the most overlooked points of having your own website is considering where your servers are. It does not seem so important but where in the world your servers are located does have a fair impact on the smooth running of your site.

One of the areas that this has an impact on is how your site ranks in country specific results. For example if you are based in the UK with a country identified domain name such as co.uk, Google will assume that you are UK based and display your page in local listings. But what if your domain is not country specific like a .com? Well then Google turns to where your server is based to up listings. You could be based in the UK but if your servers are not then that eliminates you from local searches.

The distance of your servers can also have an effect on the load speed of your site. If your server is on the other side of the planet that could dramatically slow down the loading time of the pages. Web hosts have been known to swap their servers for ‘cheaper’ ones abroad but soon find that their server can be constantly busy and their websites ceasing to operate all together. At the present moment, Google does not rank its pages on loading time but insiders have claimed that could soon change. Google is aiming to be as fast as possible, so there is no doubt that in the future they will begin ranking their pages based on website loading times. Ranking is something that can be easily influenced so being pulled down for simply having a server abroad is easily avoidable.
