1&1 Internet is a very large and successful company, from which one can only conclude that they must have a very large number of satisfied customers. I presume therefore that I am writing as one of a minority for whom dealing with 1&1 has not been such a pleasant experience. During the short time that I was with 1&1, their facilities appeared to be very good from a technical point of view and they certainly offered a wide range of services at reasonable prices.
One morning however I was suddenly confronted with the fact that they had suspended my web space without any prior warning, saying that it was due to abuse, as large amounts of SPAM were being generated from my web space. (I had no prior awareness of any such problem and have since learned that it was probably due to a hacker exploiting a vulnerability within one of my PHP scripts.) I took immediate steps to resolve the problem by telephoning support, but was unable to be put in contact with a member of staff able to deal directly with the issue, and was told that the matter had to be resolved by e-mail. My e-mail to the Abuse Department was to no avail as it was never replied to. The situation was intolerable, such that within a very short space of time I moved all my web sites to an alternative provider. I wrote a letter of complaint to Customer Services at 1&1 and a whole month passed by with no response. I wrote again, this time in person to the Managing Director and still no reply within a month of writing. The lack of customer service was just unbelievable.
If you like the look of what 1&1 provides then by all means go for it, but if you are unfortunate enough to run into serious problems, don't be surprised if the quality of their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
